چکیده

We describe an emergency evacuation support system (ESS) that employs short-range wireless communications among mobile devices carried by civilians. Emergency information is disseminated via opportunistic contacts between communication nodes (CNs), and each CN provides adaptive step-by-step navigation directions for its user during evacuation. Using mobile devices and opportunistic communications (oppcomms) allow ESS to operate when other means of communication are destroyed or overloaded. In this paper, we evaluate the resilience of oppcomms as used to enable evacuation support in ESS; we specifically consider the effect of CN failures on evacuation and communication performance. Our simulation experiments of evacuation of a three-floor office building show that ESS is highly resilient to node failures, and failure ratios up to 20% are well-tolerated.

Opportunistic Communications for Emergency Evacuation

Evacuation is an important component of emergency and disaster response. In case of emergencies, people in and near the affected area need to be quickly alerted of the emergency and evacuated along safe routes. Evacuation also needs to be fast, especially when there is a spreading hazard such as fire or flood. However, finding the best (i.e. safest and fastest) escape path is complicated due to...

Opportunistic Communications for Emergency Support Systems

Opportunistic communications (oppcomms) use low-cost human wearable mobile nodes allowing the exchange of packets at a close range of a few to some tens of meters with limited or no infrastructure. Typically cheap pocket devices which are IEEE 802.15.4-2006 compliant can be used and they can communicate at 2m to 10m range, with local computational capabilities and some local memory. In this pap...

Opportunistic Communications for Emergency Support

In this thesis, we consider the problem of providing emergency support when existing communication infrastructure is unavailable. We propose using opportunistic communications (oppcomms) among mobile devices carried by civilians for the dissemination of emergency information. With oppcomms, devices exchange messages at a close range of a few to tens of meters with limited or no infrastructure a...

Intelligent Navigation Systems for Building Evacuation

Intelligent navigation systems can significantly improve the evacuation of civilians in urban emergencies by providing dynamic directions to the evacuees as the hazard spreads. In this paper, we propose two distributed and adaptive systems for building evacuation. The first system, called intelligent evacuation system (IES), is composed of a wireless network of static decision nodes (DNs) insta...

Spatial Computers for Emergency Support

We present two spatially distributed computing systems that operate in a building and provide intelligent navigation services to people for evacuation purposes. These systems adapt to changing conditions by monitoring the building and using local communication and computation for determining the best evacuation paths. The first system, called distributed evacuation system (DES), comprises a net...
